Fuel Polishing: Why Stored Diesel Degrades and How to Fix It

Diesel does not stay fresh in a tank. If your operation depends on stored fuel — backup generators, fleet tanks, gas station storage — here is what goes wrong, how to spot it, and how fuel polishing fixes it.

Why Stored Diesel Degrades

Three processes work against any fuel that sits in a tank:

Water

Temperature swings pull humid air into the tank, where moisture condenses and settles below the fuel. Loose fill caps and failing gaskets add more. Water corrodes tank bottoms and fuel systems — and it is a prerequisite for the next problem.

Microbial growth (“diesel bug”)

Bacteria and fungi live at the interface between the water layer and the fuel, feeding on the fuel and producing sludge, slime, and corrosive acids. Modern ultra-low-sulfur diesel and biodiesel blends hold more water than older fuels, which has made microbial contamination more common.

Oxidation and sediment

Fuel reacts with oxygen over time, forming gums and dark particulates that settle into a layer of sludge. The longer fuel sits — and the more it is heated and cooled — the faster this happens.

Warning Signs of Contaminated Fuel

  • Fuel filters clogging repeatedly or ahead of schedule
  • Dark, hazy, or cloudy fuel samples instead of clear and bright
  • Sludge or slime on tank bottoms, dip sticks, or filter elements
  • Hard starts, power loss, smoking, or injector problems in equipment
  • Backup generators that start but fail under load — often discovered exactly when you need them

How Fuel Polishing Works

Fuel polishing circulates the tank's contents through progressively finer filtration and water-separation stages, stripping out free water, microbial solids, and particulate. The process typically runs until fuel samples come back clean, and it is paired with removing the sludge and water bottom from the tank itself — otherwise the contamination simply regrows. Compared to disposing of the fuel and buying new, polishing usually costs a fraction of replacement, and it can be done on-site with the fuel staying in service.

Storage Practices That Prevent Problems

  • Check for and drain water bottoms on a regular schedule
  • Keep tanks reasonably full to reduce the air space where condensation forms
  • Maintain fill caps, gaskets, and vents so rainwater and humid air stay out
  • Sample and test stored fuel periodically — especially before relying on standby generators
  • Treat confirmed microbial contamination properly; a biocide alone does not remove the dead solids that clog filters
